Managing Changing Landscapes in the Southwestern United States

This regional assessment examines the impacts of temperature change from 1951-2006 on natural resources in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. It documents that warming has already affected habitats, watersheds, and species in the Southwest, by influencing the timing of seasonal events or amplifying the impacts of natural disturbances such as wildfire and drought. The report concludes that to begin adapting to climate change, natural resource managers should reevaluate the effectiveness of current restoration tools, modify resource objectives, learn from climate-smart adaptive management and monitoring, and share information across boundaries.

NM Fire Info

The NM Fire Info website is an interagency effort by federal and state agencies in New Mexico to provide timely, accurate fire and restriction information for the entire state. The agencies that support this site are National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, State of New Mexico, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management. It provides FAQs and resources for New Mexicans living near fire-prone environments, plus current information on wildland fires, prescribed burns, restrictions and closures in the state.

San Francisco Watershed Stewardship Curriculum

From 2009 to 2010, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) funded the design and installation of five rainwater harvesting systems in elementary schools in the San Francisco Unified School District. Each project installed a tank to capture rainwater, removed paved surfaces from the schoolyard to make room for a garden and let rainwater soak into the ground, and used native and edible plants to be irrigated by the on-site rainwater harvesting system. The projects achieve multiple goals: they raise watershed awareness, green the city’s public schools, and keep stormwater out of San Francisco’s combined sewer system. To help schools use rainwater harvesting systems as educational tools, the SFPUC partnered with the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance and funded a Watershed Stewardship Curriculum. The lessons pertain to watershed awareness, green stormwater management, pollution awareness and prevention, and water conservation. All schools in San Francisco that replace schoolyard asphalt with permeable garden space and harvest rainwater for irrigation will find these lessons useful in connecting students to their watersheds. Lessons in this binder can be adapted for kindergarten through 6th grade, and beyond. Download the curriculum and put it to work in your school!

The Bureau of Reclamation's Water and Energy Efficiency Grant program solicitation is closing 17 February. The grant announcement is available on www.grants.gov using funding opportunity number R11SF80303. Reclamation is seeking proposals for projects that seek to conserve and use water more efficiently, increase the use of renewable energy in water management, protect threatened and endangered species, facilitate water markets, and carry out other activities to address climate-related impacts on water or prevent any water-related crisis or conflict. Stream Ecology/Aquatic Biology Technician

Full time, seasonal position with Taos Pueblo WarChief’s Office, Ecology Programs Division, Wildlife & Habitat Conservation Department. Full-year career appointment anticipated within one to two years of hire date based upon performance and funding. On-the-job training and concurrent enrollment in professional/educational courses possible, depending on experience and qualifications. Stream survey to include aquatic (in-channel and lake) habitat; fish and aquatic organisms; stream ecology; and, full participation with Ecology Programs Division wetland and riparian assessment teams. Baseline analysis, condition assessment, restoration programs and collaboration on stream and habitat quality. Identify, collect and analyze fish, aquatic plants, insects and other species.

Wildlife Ecology Specialist

Full time position with Ecology Programs Division, Wildlife & Habitat Conservation Department; Taos Pueblo WarChief’s Office. This is an ongoing career-conditional appointment based upon performance and funding review cycles. As a key part of the Ecology Programs Division, the Wildlife and Habitat Conservation Department directs all habitat- and species-based inventory, site assessment, and restoration efforts to assure the ecological sustainability of all wildlife within their natural environment. The Wildlife Ecology Specialist will contribute to ongoing and developing wildlife programs, conduct health and population assessments for key wildlife species, as well as participate in biodiversity planning and management within the Ecology Programs Division.

National Fish Passage Program Request for Proposals 2011

Through its National Fish Passage Program the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses a voluntary, non-regulatory approach to remove and bypass barriers. The program provides technical assistance and funding to assist others in restoring fish passage. Proposals should keep in mind the program goal to restore native fish and other aquatic species to self-sustaining levels by reconnecting habitat that has been fragmented by barriers. All projects must be located in New Mexico.
