Water Resources Engineer

Join the Center for Watershed Protection team and use your skills to make a real difference in watershed practices across the nation. We are looking for a creative individual with a proven track record to perform and manage a wide range of technical projects, including stormwater practice design and implementation, watershed protection and restoration plans, stormwater and watershed research, and writing of innovative stormwater guidance manuals.  The ideal applicant will have 2-10 years of experience in delivering on-the-ground stormwater management, watershed planning, or watershed restoration solutions, and have outstanding technical and project management skills. The individual must demonstrate an ability to effectively manage multiple projects from conception to completion while working in a fast-paced team environment. The watershed projects are both technical and geographically diverse, and may include such tasks as:

. Develop concepts and occasional engineering designs for innovative systems of structural and non-structural stormwater practices to improve water quality in urban, suburban, and rural watersheds.

. Write national and state guidance manuals to build more effective local storm water programs and design more effective stormwater practices.

. Review local and state codes to improve water resources protection.  Develop regulatory language and compliance tools for stormwater management.

. Design and implement practices to restore urban watersheds across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

. Work with local governments to develop watershed plans to protect sensitive resources in rural and suburban watersheds.

. Conduct literature reviews and research; write technical reports for both technical and lay audiences.

. Teach your watershed skills to others at conferences, presentations, and workshops.

Qualifications: Bachelors in civil or environmental engineering or related field, Masters preferred. Strong writing and speaking skills essential, with demonstrated ability to translate complex engineering and science concepts into clear and understandable terms. Some out-of town travel is expected.  Additional desirable skills and experience include:

. General Watershed/Site Assessment
o Surveying
o Stream Corridor Assessments
o Water Quality Sampling and Analysis
o Wetland Delineation

. Stormwater Management Program Planning
o Knowledge of NPDES Stormwater Regulations
o Knowledge of stormwater regulations and design criteria and standards

. BMP Concept Design
o Stormwater BMP Design Experience
o Experience with Design-Bid-Build (and perhaps Design-Build) Process
o Experience with Plan Review/Environmental Permitting Process

. Project management experience

. Experience working with local or state governments

. Experience in hydrologic and hydraulic theory and modeling

. Research experience
