- Wildland fires are a natural feature of many ecosystems, including grasslands, forests, and shrublands. However, years of fire exclusion have led to accumulations of dead fuels and increases in the density of fire-intolerant species.
- Cumulative Watershed Effects of Fuel Management in the Western United States
- Fire suppression in the last century has resulted in forests with excessive amounts of biomass, leading to more severe wildfires, covering greater areas, requiring more resources for suppression and mitigation, and causing increased onsite and offsite damage to forests and watersheds. Forest managers are now attempting to reduce this accumulated biomass by thinning, prescribed fire, and other management activities. These activities will impact watershed health, particularly as larger areas are treated and treatment activities become more widespread in space and in time. Management needs, laws, social pressures, and legal findings have underscored a need to synthesize what we know about the cumulative watershed effects of fuel management activities. In this 2010 synthesis by the Rocky Mountain Research Station, 14 chapters were defined covering fire and forests, machinery, erosion processes, water yield and quality, soil and riparian impacts, aquatic and landscape effects, and predictive tools and procedures. These chapters provide an overview of our current understanding of the cumulative watershed effects of fuel management in the western United States.

- New Post-Wildfire Guide for Communities Now Available
- As wildfires continue to impact the western United States, a new guide has been developed to help those impacted by wildfire in New Mexico start on the path to recovery. New Mexico State Forestry, along with many interagency partners, has created this guide and a companion website called “After Wildfire: A Guide for New Mexico Communities,” according to New Mexico Forest and Watershed Health Office Coordinator Susan Rich, who led the project.

- This November 2010 report by the Forest Guild, commissioned by the Climate Action Reserve, highlights the differences in carbon storage in major forest types of the U.S. The report discusses the influence that growth cycles, external disturbances, and forest management practices have on LDW. The report also provides an in-depth discussion of various sampling methods and guidance for managers planning dead wood inventories.

- The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), Forestry Division (Division) is issuing a Request for Applications for the implementation of the 2012 Western Wildland Urban Interface Grant program that will reduce the fire threat to New Mexico’s communities. The Division is soliciting Applications from counties, municipalities, soil and water conservation districts, and tribes that are surrounded by hazardous forest fuels, which pose a threat in the event of a wildland fire.
