Request for Proposals for Watershed-Based Planning Projects by Susan Rich, last updated: Mar 09, 2011 05:11 PM
RFP for Watershed-Based Planning Projects issued 3/4/11 by NM Environment Department, Surface Water Quality Bureau, Watershed Protection Section. A portion of the §319(h) funding awarded to the New Mexico Environment Department in fiscal year 2012 will fund stakeholder-driven initiatives to develop watershed-based plans which quantitatively describe sources of nonpoint source pollution, identify management measures to address pollutant loading, quantify the effects that implementation of those management measures would have, and accomplish other planning elements.

Lite Geology by Susan Rich, last updated: Mar 09, 2011 04:47 PM
Lite Geology was started in the fall of 1992 as a quarterly publication geared at earth science teachers in New Mexico. NMBGMR continues to publish Lite Geology on an intermittent basis. Lite Geology is written in a format that is less technical than other publications of the bureau. Included with the main articles are cartoons, puzzles, poetry, and other features designed to make learning fun. We also include information about teachers' resources, and upcoming geological and scientific events.

Cumulative Watershed Effects of Fuel Management in the Western United States by Susan Rich, last updated: Feb 23, 2011 05:45 PM
Fire suppression in the last century has resulted in forests with excessive amounts of biomass, leading to more severe wildfires, covering greater areas, requiring more resources for suppression and mitigation, and causing increased onsite and offsite damage to forests and watersheds. Forest managers are now attempting to reduce this accumulated biomass by thinning, prescribed fire, and other management activities. These activities will impact watershed health, particularly as larger areas are treated and treatment activities become more widespread in space and in time. Management needs, laws, social pressures, and legal findings have underscored a need to synthesize what we know about the cumulative watershed effects of fuel management activities. In this 2010 synthesis by the Rocky Mountain Research Station, 14 chapters were defined covering fire and forests, machinery, erosion processes, water yield and quality, soil and riparian impacts, aquatic and landscape effects, and predictive tools and procedures. These chapters provide an overview of our current understanding of the cumulative watershed effects of fuel management in the western United States.
