ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Vegetation Monitoring Technician participates primarily in monitoring vernal pool invertebrates and vegetation, and secondarily in general preserve stewardship.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Invertebrate collection, fixation, and identification.
  • Floristic data collection.
  • Data entry into digital format.
  • Manual weed control.
  • Hiking trail maintenance.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to quickly memorize the Latin names and identification characters of invertebrates and plants.
  • Ability to identify plants to species, using Latin names, in the field from memory.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software on a Windows operating system. Experience with Microsoft Access a plus.
  • Physical endurance to work outdoors, tolerate cool and warm weather, use hand tools, and occasionally lift heavy objects.
  • Willingness to perform manual labor tasks involved in preserve stewardship.
AUTO SAFETY POLICY
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Vegetation Monitoring Technician may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
  • require frequent minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • require occasional considerable physical exertion
  • present frequent possibility of exposure to ticks and poison oak
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require working in isolated settings
