2011 has been a tough year for New Mexico’s rangelands. After a dry winter, unrelenting winds and continuing precipitation deficits resulted in exceptional drought conditions over much of the state. The hot, dry, and windy conditions also led to the worst fire year in New Mexico history with more than 1 million acres burned. These extreme conditions have presented numerous challenges for rangeland managers. The 2012 New Mexico SRM Winter meeting will focus on management challenges encountered during this time. Online registration will be available via Allen Press

AGENDA
Wednesday, January 4, 2012
‐ Field TourNoon Depart from Socorro BLM Office to the allotment. Department of Defense acquired the deeded land and lease for this allotment to create a buffer for evacuations on the north end of the bombing range. The Corps of Engineers has recently subleased grazing rights and the lessees are in the process of rehabilitating the deteriorated range improvements on the allotment. In addition to water delivery system improvements and fencing, herbicide treatment of sand sage, prescription fire, thinning, and erosion control projects have been implemented. We will also incorporate an introduction to the New Mexico Rangeland Judging Contest with the tour.
