Join Krys Nystrom of the Wildfire Network, Jan-Willem Jansens of Ecotone Landscape Planning, and Zander Evans of the Forest Stewards Guild for a wildfire home hazard risk assessment training and tour of a woodland restoration project in the Wildland Urban Interface. The training will take place at a private residence and to limit parking issues we will be meeting at 9:45 am the Atalaya Lower Trailhead parking lot off of Camino de Cruz Blanca in the St. John's College parking lot. New Mexico Forest Industry Association is proposing to hold a Forest Worker Safety Certification class in Silver City on February 24-26, 2016.

The pre-conference workshop will include field visits to advanced flood control/ green infrastructure sites, including small scale flood control projects by Bernalillo County, as well as large scale projects completed by SSCAFCA. Lead engineers and project managers will discuss the design of the projects, problems experienced during construction, and the impact these features have had on the river.

Through concurrent sessions, panels, Q&A, and field trips, you will learn new information about wildlife and habitat, biological control, biomass removal/use, native plants, streambank bioengineering, and more.

This full-day workshop is anchored by restoration specialist, Bill Zeedyk who owns and operates a small consulting business specializing in the restoration of wetland and riparian habitats. Bill is familiar to Quivira audiences as the innovator of successful riparian restoration methods based on his philosophy of “thinking like a creek” and using low-tech, hands-on methods and native materials. He will share his latest ideas and new restoration strategies for adapting to hotter and drier conditions developing across the Southwest.
