Advocates discuss protecting streams and restoring rivers
Titled “From Mountaintop to River Bottom: Teaming up for Healthy Watersheds,” the forum’s speakers focused on collaboration among agencies and citizens—and the need to look upstream when thinking about watershed restoration. Speakers hit on issues including the effect of forest thinning projects on downstream waters, restoration in the Valles Caldera National Preserve and restoration projects in the Middle Rio Grande.

AridLID 2012 Call for Abstracts
For the past two years, the AridLID Workshops held in Albuquerque, New Mexico have built a growing discussion and exposition of Green Infrastructure (GI) and Low Impact Development (LID) practices that are appropriate to the unique climates of the southwestern U.S. In 2012, we are holding the conference in Tucson, Arizona, with the twin goals of sharing best practices and building professional networks across a wider swath of the region, and of developing a clearer Southwestern vision and voice in the growing national discussion on GI/LID. We are now soliciting proposals for speakers and posters.

BLM to Use State, Regional Data in Identifying Wildlife Corridors, Crucial Habitat
Washington, D.C. - The Bureau of Land Management announced today that it will use state and regional data and maps to help it identify wildlife corridors and crucial habitat in future land-use planning and management efforts. The maps will be available for the BLM to use as a result of the Western Wildlife Crucial Habitat Assessment Tool, known as "CHAT", an initiative of the Western Governors' Association. In 2009, the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture and Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Western Governors' Association regarding coordination among federal agencies and states in the identification and uniform mapping of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat. Information developed through the CHAT will facilitate an organized and comprehensive approach to obtaining wildlife-related data and maps by the BLM and other federal agencies. A West-wide CHAT is expected to be available in 2013.
