GROUND WATER QUALITY BUREAU

NEW MEXICO ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT

 

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Ground Water Quality Bureau (GWQB) anticipates the advertisement of a vacant Geoscientist – Supervisor position (#12220) in the Pollution Prevention Program in mid to late March.  

 

This position is a supervisor within the Pollution Prevention Section of the GWQB, and supervises at least 2 environmental professionals who issue, maintain, inspect and enforce ground water discharge permits for agricultural facilities statewide pursuant to the State Water Quality Act and Water Quality Control Commission Regulations (20.6.2 NMAC and 20.6.6 NMAC).  The position also manages a caseload of discharge permits, and assists the Program Manager with ensuring compliance with program and regulatory requirements.  The position reports directly to the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Program Manager.  The position also serves in a leadership role by identifying, prioritizing, and implementing ways to improve program effectiveness in regulating agricultural facilities. 

 

The position provides regulatory and technical expertise to facility owners, operators and the public regarding operational and closure issues to ensure compliance with discharge permit requirements.  This Geoscientist - Supervisor will conduct field investigations; oversee and conduct field sampling; analyze data and participate in technical meetings; prepare exhibits, presentations and testimony for public meetings and hearings relating to agricultural discharge permits; train personnel in Department and Section policies and use of templates and Standard Operating Procedures.  An understanding of the principals of hydrogeology, chemistry, agronomy, and soil science is beneficial for this position.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors of Science in Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry or Environmental Science, and five (5) years of experience in water quality regulatory programs, ground water investigations and remediation and/or hazardous waste management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. The salary range for this position is typically $28.76 (midpoint) to $36.80 (maximum) per hour depending on job duties and experience.
